EMCON pioneered rural grid electrification in Namibia, developing an appropriate electrification concept as well as the associated technical standards, introducing prepayment metering to the country as part of the process. In addition, we introduced the concept of baseline household energy surveys, to enable the assessment of the impacts of rural electrification on the local communities. We were at the forefront with the introduction of SWER (Single Wire Earth Return) systems in Namibia, and have since executed various projects of this nature. To date we have designed and executed over 50% of all rural electrification projects locally. Outside of Namibia, we have undertaken several key projects in various SADC countries. Our innovative approach and quality product has ensured our continued involvement with utilities and participation in their rural electrification projects.
Through our drive for customer satisfaction, EMCON has pioneered a number of innovative solutions to overcome challenges and obstacles that urban electrification projects often present, resulting in the execution of numerous projects in various urban centres throughout Namibia.
We have executed numerous feasibility studies for the funding of electrification projects, and in the process gained vast experience in all aspects relevant. These studies take into consideration the technical as well as financial viability of projects, with the aim of maximising the socio-economic benefit to communities. In 2009, we secured funding from the European Investment Bank (EIB) for the single largest rural electrification project in Namibia to date.
